COURTNEY MAY HAVE JUST SAVED MY LIFE!!! I can't speak highly enough about her. I've been struggling with unimaginable constant exhaustion for a few years - which made it impossible to keep a job or hold any quality of life. Other doctors, including sleep specialists, never considered I had an actual sleep disorder, or would assume I had sleep apnea even though I never have any symptoms of apnea besides my exhaustion. Yet, at my first appointment with Courtney, she gave me space to express not just my experiences with sleep but also the ways my constant sleepiness and sleep attacks affected all aspects of my life. She immediately stated that she believed I may have narcolepsy and ordered the PSG AND the MSLT. Given that it typically take 8-15 years (and even more for women) for folks to finally get a narcolepsy diagnosis, it says so much about Courtney's immediate response to my symptoms. In my research, I read that many sleep doctors will avoid a narcolepsy diagnosis almost entirely. The fat that Courtney was able to hear me and understand how much my sleep was affecting my quality of life. She had an open mind and questioned me about how I dream and "hallucinate" - questions no doctor has ever asked me! And because of my answers to those questions, she immediately ordered both a PSG and MSLT. Even the sleep clinic tech managing my PSG acted as though I'd show I had apnea and not actually have to stay for the MSLT. The fact that narcolepsy is this disorder that is so often ignored and not considered as a possible diagnosis - the fact that Courtney called it in my first appointment with her is so amazing and shows that she is able to see each patient as they are and not be bias against considering rarer diagnoses says so much about how wonderful of a practitioner she is! When I came back for my follow-up after my PSG and MSLT to get my results. She came in and shook my hand, looked meIn the eye, and greeted me - immediately creating a space that felt safe and that helped build my trust with her. She directly stated "you definitely have narcolepsy" and then spent over 30 minutes answering my questions, giving me space to cry and make "holy sh**" and other similar exclamations, and going over my treatment plan - during which she allowed me to advocate for myself, ask questions, share concerns, and express my goals moving forward. If it weren't for Courtney being willing to consider narcolepsy as a possible diagnosis, I could potentially be living for years without answers or proper treatment. My narcolepsy kept me jobless, led to me losing my home, forced me to surrender 4 of my dogs, influenced incredible issues with my mental health, and nearly ended my relationship. In my mind, Courtney is the best thing that's ever happened to me (don't tell that to my boyfriend lol). I'm so grateful for what she did for me. I FINALLY feel validated - I knew something was wrong-wrong, while to others I was just lazy, depressed, dramatic, etc. My life is changed forever because Courtney was so willing to suspect narcolepsy and order the necessary testing. Now I'm being treated and can continue evolving my treatment to best meet my needs with each visit with Courtney. She brought my humanity back. I get to finally live this beautiful life with my eyes open.
